Alex Jones was ordered to pay $473 million in punitive damages as part of the Sandy Hook defamation case

(Reuters) The conspiracy theorist Alex Jones must pay $473 million in punitive damages due to his false claims regarding the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012.

The decision came one month after a juror located in Waterbury, Connecticut, found that Jones and the parent company

that runs his Infowars website have to be responsible for paying more than 12 family members from Sandy Hook victims nearly $1 billion in compensatory damages

after not claiming that their actors staged the massacre in part of a plot by the government to take over Americans firearms.

In a separate decision late Wednesday afternoon, Judge Barbara Bellis temporarily stopped Jones from transferring any personal assets from the country.

The decision was made on the advice of plaintiffs, who allege Jones is trying to conceal assets in order to avoid having to pay.

Jones is currently being held accountable for the sum that is $1.49 billion of damages from the two Sandy Hook defamation cases that went to trial in the year. Another case is in the process in Texas.

On December. 14 in 2012, an assassin shot and killed his mother and then killed twenty children as well as six employees of Sandy Hook Elementary School before shooting himself.
