Gallagher the watermelon-smashing comedian passed away at the age of 76.

as well as numerous TV specials that were popular during the 80s, passed away early on Friday, according to his agent Craig Marquardt. He was 76.

According to a press release provided by CNN by Marquardt, the comedian passed away "after a short health battle" and "passed away surrounded by his family in Palm Springs, California."

Gallagher was originally Leo Gallagher, became a famous name in the early 1980s when he hosted a comedy special named "An Uncensored Evening,"

the first stand-up comedy special to be broadcast on cable TV as per an obituary posted by Marquardt.

The most well-known part of Gallagher's career was the use of a sledgehammer that he made himself, dubbed"the "Sledge-O-Matic,"

which he used to smash food items on the stage, and spray them on the audience.

"That was something else he liked to claim credit for, which was physically engaging the audience in that manner," the obituary stated.
