One of the Biggest Game Studios has been shut down

It is believed that the Embracer Group, a Swedish media, and video games holding company, is said to be closing down Onoma within a few months of it being acquired.

Onoma previously called Square Enix Montreal, was prior to being acquired along with all of Square Enix's western assets in August of this year.

The studio then switched its name to Onoma however it appears that Embracer had different goals for Onoma.

According to IGN, the decision is likely to be to reduce costs.

In addition, IGN has informed its employees a portion of employees will be transferred to the sister studio called Eidos Montreal,

which was acquired along with Onoma and the San Francisco-based Crystal Dynamics.

Prior to their acquisition, the trio had been known for releasing several of the greatest hits in the history of gaming,

including franchises that are not known to younger generations of gamers but are cherished by gamers of a certain age.

Onoma's closure is rather unique due to the timing. The company had already announced its rebranding as well as an entirely new game currently in development.
