Cory Barlog (two-time God of War game director) stated that a retail store sold God of War Ragnarok almost two weeks before its release.

Barlog tweeted, "You know, right here, I can really understand why you have just an installer on the disk," referring to the almost useless physical disc for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Barlog explained that this was a joke and that he didn't advocate for install-only discs.

Barlog stated that he was disappointed that some aspects of God of War Ragnarok could be spoiled for players due to the game's early release.
