The Racist Backlash against Halle Bailey's "The Little Mermaid"

The first teaser trailer for Disney's live-action version of The Little Mermaid was released over the weekend by Disney.

Although the clip is short and not much in the way of actual footage, it gives us the goods. Halle Bailey stars as Ariel singing "Part of Your World."

Bailey looks great and sounds great as she adds a vocal trill to the second verse and rocked that familiar red hair.

There's nothing else here, except for the camera following Ariel underwater as she navigates through the jungles and vegetation of the kingdom Atlantica.

It's a glimpse at Rob Marshall's adaptation. Perfectly sufficient if you're not already a Disney stan.

You can be down on The Little Mermaid based on Disney's track record of live-action remakes. (Bad. They're bad.) They're terrible.)

Halle Bailey is Black. Ariel, an animated character that was created in 1989, looks white. Ariel's skin color is irrelevant.

Bailey has a lot of talent and Bailey's talents are evident. It was therefore unacceptable to cast a young Black woman as the main role.

Disney should not have cast a cartoon-like princess in place of Ariel.
