Verlander wins the elusive WS: "It wasn’t easy"

Justin Verlander said that he didn't think about the possibility of this being his last start in an Astros uniform. It was a great way out.

Verlander pitched five strong innings of one-run baseball in the Astros' 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 5 at Citizens Bank Park. He also won the rare Fall Classic victory.

Verlander stated that "it wasn't easy" during the FOX broadcast. It was hard work.

Philadelphia managed four hits from Verlander, who walked four times and struck out six during a 94-pitch effort.

It was the first time Verlander had been out of a World Series game leading his team in nine years.

After Verlander won a 10-pitch match to get Nick Castellanos out for the fifth inning, Dusty Baker, the manager of the visitors, was warmly welcomed into the dugout by Verlander.

Baker was criticized for not sticking with Verlander in Game 1. Houston lost 6-5 in 10 innings.

Verlander was able to escape trouble in the second innings when he struck out Rhys Hoskins and pinned the bases loaded. Then, a Bryson Stott flyout allowed two runners to be stranded in the third.
